What We Do
We represent hand-selected, small, old-world producers making genuinely special, environmentally sustainable wines, and bring them to the right buyers in Canada.
We work closely with restaurant owners and sommeliers to create tailored culinary pairings, helping to author a wine list that tells a story and delights their guests.
Through international wine fairs and estate visits, we continuously seek new voices among wine producers.
For serious collectors, we gain access to small-allocation wines, cellar-worthy bottles, and bespoke procurement, curated for a discriminating palate and personal cellar goals.
Behind the Name
Louis Hébert — Parisian apothecary, botanist, and adventurer — arrived at Port Royal, Acadia (now Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia) in 1606 alongside Samuel de Champlain. He was the first European apothecary to practice in the New World, learning the medicinal properties of local plants from the Mi'kmaq people.
While at Port Royal, Hébert planted vines — the first recorded attempt to grow grapes in what would become Canada. Four centuries later, Apothecary Imports carries the same spirit: bringing the finest of the Old World to the shores of Nova Scotia.
The Importer
Paul Doucette is a Nova Scotia emergency room physician and certified sommelier — a combination that is, in the world of fine wine, quite special. Since completing his sommelier certification through CAPS/ASI in 2010, he has pursued excellence through the Wine Scholar Guild, earning Wine Scholar designation in the wines of France, Italy and Spain, and a Master designation in the Loire Valley. As President of the Atlantic Chapter of the Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers, he led the bid that brought the Best Sommelier of Canada championships to Halifax in 2024.
Apothecary Imports is the natural convergence of his two lifelong passions: healing and discovery.
