Conducting rare and fine wines
from the Old World to Nova Scotia, Canada
Like the apothecary of medieval times seeking to mix the elements of nature to create magic, Apothecary Imports today blends fine wine with cuisine to create the sublime.
Distinctive fine wines, emphasizing wines made through environmentally sustainable and organic methods. Boutique-style imports by special order, with bespoke culinary pairings.
What We Do
We represent hand-selected small producers — growers making wines of genuine character — and bring them to the right buyers across Canada.
We work closely with restaurant owners and sommeliers to build wine lists that tell a story and delight guests at every price point.
Wine and food belong together. We create tailored pairing recommendations for menus, private dinners, and special occasions.
Serious collectors gain access to allocation wines, cellar-worthy bottles, and bespoke procurement — curated for your palate and cellar goals.
Through international wine fairs and estate visits, we continuously seek new voices in wine — discovering tomorrow's producers before the world catches on.
Private tastings, staff education, and producer dinners — we bring the story of each wine to life for the people who will share it with guests.
Why Apothecary?
Louis Hébert — Parisian apothecary, botanist, and adventurer — arrived at Port Royal, Acadia (now Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia) in 1606 alongside Samuel de Champlain. He was the first European apothecary to practice in the New World, learning the medicinal properties of local plants from the Mi'kmaq people.
While at Port Royal, Hébert planted vines — the first recorded attempt to grow grapes in what would become Canada. Four centuries later, Apothecary Imports carries the same spirit: bringing the finest of the Old World to the shores of Nova Scotia.
The Importer
Paul Doucette is a Nova Scotian emergency room physician and certified sommelier — a combination that is, in the world of fine wine, essentially unique. Since earning his sommelier certification in 2010, he has pursued mastery through the Wine Scholar Guild, earning designations in the wines of France, Italy, Spain and a Master designation in the Loire Valley. As President of the Atlantic Chapter of the Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers, he led the bid that brought the Best Sommelier of Canada championships to Halifax in 2024.
Apothecary Imports is the natural convergence of two lifelong obsessions: healing and discovery.
